Do your sales stats look like a mountain range? Can you figure out what the mountains and valleys are all about?
Even though I market on a very consistent basis I have books whose sales stats resemble the Rocky Mountains. I can usually attribute the high spikes to a particular marketing event. In the screenshot above I was experimenting with free-day promotions spaced only ten days apart.
I quite liked the first sales spike one day after the free-day ended. It spiked nicely and then, though it slowly slid down, it was still generating a very nice number of sales. The second big spike 10 days later … went straight up and then straight back to normal in one day.
The spike that surprised me the most is the Blue spike several days after the free promo. Another residual effect of the FREE-days program, this time from customers who are “borrowing” the book. Makes me happy, because I get paid for them.
