Responsive Website Development
When considering web design, it is critical to keep up with new trends. Technology changes rapidly and unfortunately your website has to keep up. The biggest trend today is known as responsive web design. Responsive websites work on every screen no matter the size.
Responsive sites are easy to read, navigate, resize, pan, and scroll on a wide selection of devices. This means that visitors are able to easily access and use your website whether they are on a huge desktop monitor, a medium-sized tablet, or their smartphone.
How do responsive website layouts work?
Responsive sites are created using a series of grids that are proportion-based as opposed to traditional absolute-based grids using pixels or points. Every single thing from the layout to images, and text must be able to “flex” within the grids. The fluidity of the grid call for specific sizing of page elements in percentages, including images. All elements within the grids are set up in order to give the viewer a rich, and functional experience.
Responsive layouts rely on both design coding (CSS) and programming. Though they can be stunningly beautiful, responsive site-design is somewhat restrictive and can be demanding. Templates must be mapped out so they work from the largest screen to the smallest. Each element must be able to move, shift and change. Grid layouts must be able to work in both horizontal formats (your desktop or laptop monitor) and in vertical formats (smart phones).
Responsive web design is rapidly becoming the norm, and if you are considering a new website, or an update of your old website you should seriously consider a responsive design. The fact that your website is available on multiple devices will increase your audience, your reach and your traffic.
Building a responsive design from scratch is not something for a novice designer, and having a custom built responsive design would cost you tens-of-thousands of dollars. The GOOD NEWS is that there are now dozens of responsive templates available. And many of them are enabled for WordPress installation.
One of the most flexible website designs I’ve seen is an Elegant Themes template called DIVI. DIVI is fully responsive and once you’ve gone through the initial learning curve, is one of the most flexible templates I’ve seen. You do need to have a bit of “design sense” in order to build a website with DIVI. Elegant Themes has well over a dozen other beautiful, responsive templates to choose from.
You can purchase professionally built templates ranging from $50 to $200. The challenge of course, is in knowing how to set up your site using a responsive template. When designers say it’s EASY … watch out!
