The magazine and newspaper industry is constantly evolving and publications are launched and discontinued regularly. However, according to the Alliance for Audited Media, there were approximately 7,000 magazines in circulation in North America as of 2020. The number of newspapers is harder to determine, but according to the Pew Research Center, there were about 5,800 daily newspapers in the United States in 2019. This number does not include community newspapers or weekly publications.
And those are the stats from just North America or the US. Add in the UK, Australia, New Zealand and English language publications in other countries and you’ll be busy for few days!
Most magazines and newspapers do NOT charge for writing and publishing reviews. BUT read carefully because some, like Kirkus, DO charge and some of them charge a LOT!
The following lists are to give you an idea of the range of publications there are. They are just a starting point.
These are a few short lists to get you started.. Look at each publication separately. Find their contact page or email address and write a short, polite inquiry. NEVER send an ARC (Advance Review Copy) without permission, and in the format requested. Some reviews will want a paperback copy, others will accept e-pubs or PDFs. NEVER send Word or Google docs.
Here are some well known Editorial Review Sites:
Most of these publications review books from any genre and some of them are quite easy to get reviews from. IF you think you have a great book, send in a query. Every author found in The New York Times Weekend Supplement started with a query.
